eBay Payment Hold vs Payout Hold: What's the Difference?
These two terms get used interchangeably by sellers, but they don't describe the same thing.
"My money is held" covers more than one actual situation on eBay, and the difference matters for what — if anything — resolves it. A payment hold generally relates to a specific transaction: a buyer dispute, a delivery not yet confirmed, or a new-seller review period on early sales. A payout hold or delay relates to the broader flow of funds out of the account via Managed Payments, which can be affected by account-level review, verification requirements, or performance metrics rather than any single transaction.
Because these have different causes, they often have different resolutions. A transaction-level hold frequently resolves once delivery is confirmed or a dispute closes. An account-level payout issue is more often tied to verification or performance review — the kind of underlying account health that ongoing eBay account management exists to keep in order — and resolving the underlying account issue — not the individual transaction — is what actually releases the funds.
